Poster Board Project

 Poster Board Project

Out of all of the many demographics that make up U of D, the starkest is one no one ever thinks about: the average academy student vs an honors senior. Without doing any prior research on the topic, I believe it is fair to say that most academy kids either hate reading, or at the very least do little to none of it in their free time. The question that is being begged is why?

To get to the bottom of this mystery of the academy’s dislike of reading, it is imperative to know why they aren’t very fond of it. This requires interviewing them, to pick their brain on what specific things draw them away from reading. I will ask them four quick questions: their name, their grade, if they like reading, and if no why not. The plan would be to interview at least 10 of them, as their answers will definitely repeat multiple times. Voice recording would be preferable, but if not allowed then writing down would also work.

After the academy’s brain is picked, it is time to go to the exact opposite end of the totem pole: the Ap English IV seniors. As one myself, I know that in order to be successful in honors English classes at U of D of all places, one of two things is required of you:you must absolutely love to read or at least be incredibly proficient with reading. With all of this wealth of knowledge lying around, it is an extreme waste to let it just sit in the minds of us seniors. This is why I want to also interview these seniors, by asking them three questions:Name, if they like reading, and how they overcame the selected academy student’s problem with reading. By Putting the issues side by side, it allows the Academy kid to look up and see how others have dealt with their same issues, and thrived. Another benefit of this is that the A.P. English classes are absolutely loaded with school leaders. Every member of the senate, multiple club leaders, and even many team captains are members of these classes. By looking up at leaders who have solved their problem the Academy students would gain a lot.

Finally, after gaining all of the Data, printing pictures for the students (with permission), and purchasing five poster boards, the stage would be set. I would assemble the boards, and place them around the third floor, so that the academy kids could see it on their way to classes.

  1. I think this is a great and very unique idea! Do you have any other ideas on how to make the poaster boards engaging to look at?

  2. How would you make these poster boards interesting for the students? If they just have words and pictures of students wouldn't they get overloooked?

  3. How will your posters be different than any other overlooked flyer?

  4. Would the selection of students be entirely random? There might be a lot that goes into how much a senior can or likes to read. Would that be considered?

  5. How would you determine who to interview?

  6. I really like this idea, as it goes straight to where most people started to really dislike reading and can help fix that before they get to high school.
