Literacy Project:Reading

 The Project-

I chose to do a poster project, as I felt as though it would be the easiest way to reach the academy students in an impactful way, in order to be able to convince them to read. As previously stated, the purpose of my project was to figure out the core reasons why some academy students don’t read, and to show them that by reading more and taking more challenging English classes, that they will not only improve their reading skills but maybe even like it as well.

The Poster-

I choose to have the format of the poster be three small posters on one big poster, with silver borders on the big poster board. I choose this format, to make it easy to read, easy to read just one at a time, easy to show the different problems, and more meat than me just writing on the poster board myself. Each small poster started with the academy kid’s reason for not liking reading in big bold letters, and then an A.P. English students explaining how accelerated reading has helped them with said issue. I made it very accessible, but put it right at the top of the stairs of the third floor, so they will most likely see it every time they come to school.

Reflection Time-

My project did have some roadblocks and setbacks in it, as all projects tend to have in some way or another. First of all, way more academy students said they enjoyed reading than expected, so it was much harder than expected to get the desired responses from them. I personally think they weren’t all telling the truth, since I was taking a survey they might have thought was for a teacher, but I have no concrete way to prove this. Also, when sending out the questions to A.P. students, one I didn’t really like how focused the responses were on “accelerated reading”, and two most of them never even responded. This most likely is due to a bad forming of the question on my part, but it is frustrating nonetheless. I believe my project serves its purpose though, and if even one academy kid begins to read more or decides to take harder English classes in highschool, then my poster did its job. I have no idea how much it’ll be read or even looked at by the academy, but I hope it does something for someone.
