Last Reflection

Why did I sign Up?

To be honest, I definitely did not sign up for this class. I signed up for Shakespere with Mr. Hill, and I was really looking forward to that. That class was unfortunately canceled, and when presented with the other option for classes, I picked this one for several reasons. First of all, I really like reading, and I especially really like to read newer books. I don’t really ever have time to read, so I thought this class would give me a great excuse to read. I also liked Mr. Davidson was a teacher when I had him sophomore year, so I was excited to take his class again, as he was kind of the one who got me back into reading.

My Favorite Novel?

I really enjoyed Mr. Penumbra’s 24-hour Bookstore and Please Ignore Vera Dietz as well, but the novel that always comes back to me is The Art of Racing in the Rain. This novel is fantastic, from the plot, to the drama, to the characters, and even the dog narrator, but what really makes the novel special is the warm feeling it gives the reader. The novel is so human and evokes emotion through fantastic racing analogies that really make the reader feel the emotional strife Denny has to go through in his life. This was also the only novel this year that made me cry, as I am a little ashamed to admit that I sobbed for a good 5-10 minutes at the end of the novel.

Who Should Take This Course?

The only people who should take this course are people who truly like to read. This course had a surprising amount of work in it, but whenever I was catching up on work or starting to complain, for me I found solace in the fact that I actually liked the novels. I can imagine that if I did not like to read or if I didn’t like any of the selected novels, this class would have been a nightmare for me, so I only recommend this to people who like to read.

  ​The Project- I chose to do a poster project, as I felt as though it would be the easiest way to reach the academy students in an impactful way, in order to be able to convince them to read. As previously stated, the purpose of my project was to figure out the core reasons why some academy students don’t read, and to show them that by reading more and taking more challenging English classes, that they will not only improve their reading skills but maybe even like it as well.  The Poster- I choose to have the format of the poster be three small posters on one big poster, with silver borders on the big poster board. Mr. Penumbra's 24 Hour Book Store Review

William McConico Mr Davidson Contemporary Literature, 2nd Period   September 13th , 2023 AMDG  Penumbra Book Review *spoiler alert Mr. Penumbra’s 24 Hour Bookstore by Robin Sloan is a mysterious 21st century novel that follows Clay Jannon navigating Mr. Penumbra’s mysterious bookstore. Clay gets this job after seeing a flier in the window of the store, and coming in to get the job. He accepted the mysterious job, with horrible night hours, as it was the 2008 recession and he just needed a job. When employed by Mr. Penumbra is told to write detailed descriptions of the customers, be extremely punctual, and to never ever read the books. Clay lives with his roommates Matt and Ashley, with the former being super artsy and the latter being very organized. When Matt comes in and looks at some of the books, Clay realizes there is more to the store, and begins his investigation. Poster Board Project

  Poster Board Project Out of all of the many demographics that make up U of D, the starkest is one no one ever thinks about: the average academy student vs an honors senior. Without doing any prior research on the topic, I believe it is fair to say that most academy kids either hate reading, or at the very least do little to none of it in their free time. The question that is being begged is why? To get to the bottom of this mystery of the academy’s dislike of reading, it is imperative to know why they aren’t very fond of it. This requires interviewing them, to pick their brain on what specific things draw them away from reading. I will ask them four quick questions: their name, their grade, if they like reading, and if no why not. The plan would be to interview at least 10 of them, as their answers will definitely repeat multiple times.
